Austria 1961 - Recovered Rocket Crash Mail – LUPOSTA Vienna, Rocket No. 9

A striking piece of experimental postal history: a cover recovered from the crash of postal rocket No. 9 during the LUPOSTA rocket-mail trials near Vienna on 23 May 1961. The cover bears the distinctive violet “Absturz Rakete 9” crash marking, together with a Raasdorf postmark dated 23 May 1961 and illustrated rocket-mail cachets. The blue Austrian 5-schilling LUPOSTA stamp adds to its visual appeal. The accompanying album-page account describes how rocket No. 9 failed to deploy its parachutes and plunged to the ground. The mail was recovered crumpled and soiled, with the addresses still legible. Addressed to Emil Mühl in Grünstadt/Pfalz, Germany, this cover preserves pronounced creasing and handling marks consistent with the recovery described on the album page. These features form an essential part of its historical character. An unusual and evocative addition to a collection of rocket mail, crash mail or Austrian aerophilately. Condition: heavily creased, with surface soiling and wear. Please examine the photographs carefully for markings and overall condition. I can combine the shippings strictly following the Catawiki rules. Following a recent change in international sector regulations, specifically Articles 18 and 19 of the Universal Postal Convention, starting from January 1, 2026, it will no longer be possible to send items (goods with or without commercial value) using International Registered and International Insured services, which will continue to be used exclusively for sending documents. It means that starting from January 1st, 2026, I will ship abroad only by "POSTE DELIVERY INTERNATIONAL STANDARD" starting from 25,80€ without insurance
