DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK We offer at auction a precious "Abstract Drawing" dating from the 1950s, created by Atanasio Soldati, an undisputed pioneer of geometric abstraction in Italy and a key figure of the Movimento per l'Arte Concreta (MAC). The composition, executed with great finesse in graphite on paper, immediately conveys the essence of the artist's visual research. With a clean, rational, and calculated stroke, Soldati orchestrates on the sheet a delicate balance of geometric and spatial relationships. The work distances itself from mimetic aims to investigate the pure rhythm of forms, fully embodying the ideals of concrete art, aimed at creating a completely autonomous and intellectually rigorous painting. This is a historic piece of great elegance and notable collectible significance, as the artist's premature death makes his works particularly rare and sought after on the market. The lot also boasts important official archival storage at the Atanasio Soldati Archive, which confirms its value and absolute authenticity. BIOGRAPHIC AND CRITICAL NOTES ABOUT THE ARTIST Atanasio Soldati (Parma, 1896 – Parma, 1953) is considered one of the historical fathers of abstraction in Italy. After studying architecture, he moved to Milan in the twenties, where he came into contact with the Il Milione Gallery environment, the true hub of Italian abstract avant-garde. Initially close to the Italian Novecento modules, his painting quickly matured toward a European-wide geometric purism, influenced by direct knowledge of works by the Bauhaus, Kandinsky, and Constructivism. Unlike the cold geometrism across the Alps, Soldati's abstraction always preserves an intimate poetic vein and a highly personal and calibrated chromatic lyricism. In 1948, together with Gillo Dorfles, Bruno Munari, and Gianni Monnet, he founded MAC (Movimento per l'Arte Concreta) in Milan, establishing himself as an absolute reference point for new generations of Italian artists pursuing a "concrete" art, non-figurative and independent from references to objective reality. His brilliant and intense career was cut short in 1953; nonetheless, his contribution is widely historicized. He participated in the Venice Biennale (which dedicated an important posthumous retrospective to him in 1954) and his works are today part of the most prestigious public and museum collections of modern art in Italy and abroad.
