Asiatico - Anglo-Indiano - Centre table - Camel Coffee Table - Wood

Magnificent Anglo-Indian Sculpted Coffee Table in the Shape of a Camel – Rare Circular Tabletop and Removable Neck (Late 19th / Early 20th Century) Exotic Charm and Colonial History: The British Raj at its Splendor. I present at auction a piece of exceptional marquetry craftsmanship: a classic and majestic Anglo-Indian occasional table, hand-carved entirely in the shape of a camel. Dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century, this masterpiece is the perfect example of the colonial artisanry developed in northern and western India (likely in the Gujarat region or near Simla, the historic summer capital of British India). Tables of this quality and prestige were often imported to Europe to furnish bourgeois parlors of the time, sometimes marketed by famous luxury emporia such as Liberty of London. The design depicts a decked camel standing, carved in the round with impressive realism, proudly supporting the top surface on its back, enriched with drapery, cushions, and floral saddle details finely incised. Technical Details, Rarity, and Features: Origin and Style: Anglo-Indian Colonial Craftsmanship (Era of the British Raj, 1858-1947). Material: Hard solid woods (typically teak, rosewood, or walnut), chosen for durability and to allow deep and detailed carvings. The Circular Top (Rarity): Unlike most similar models that feature an octagonal top, this specimen boasts a rare circular top (approximately Ø 38 cm), richly decorated with a central floral rosette and a refined sculpted perimeter band. Unique Mechanism (Removable Neck): The true peculiarity of this lot is a brilliant structural solution: the neck and head of the camel are removable thanks to an ancient but precise guiding (groove) system in wood. A rare engineering detail that facilitated transport during long colonial journeys. Base: The piece rests on a solid elliptical (or shaped) decorated base, which gives the work great stability and a dramatic visual presence. Indicative dimensions: Total height including a slight protrusion of the camel’s head about 60 cm; without the small protrusion about 57 cm. Total length including neck and head of the camel about 55 cm; only the table about 51 cm. Overall width about 38 cm as is the diameter of the top. Weight approximately 8.6 kg. The table comes from an exclusive family estate. Being an antique piece with over a century of history, it presents in excellent structural condition and boasts a magnificent patina of time. In the recent past it has been entrusted to a skilled craftsman for a “revitalization” and conservative wood polishing intervention, aimed at highlighting the details without erasing its history. Of course there are small, normal signs of time and use (clearly visible in the extensive photo gallery), which do not compromise its beauty but instead attest to its absolute authenticity and antique charm. It is an extremely solid, stable piece with a striking visual impact. Given the delicacy and value of the lot, I guarantee professional, tailor-made packaging that is extremely ample and protective. The table (taking advantage of the safe removal of the neck via its guide) will be packed with bubble wrap and other materials to ensure safety. Shipping is entrusted exclusively to major international couriers (UPS / DHL or similar) with tracking code. To ensure maximum peace of mind for the buyer, the lot will travel with full insurance included for the winning value.
