Artigianato tradizionale dell'India meridionale Hand...

Rare ceremonial cotton textile panel with embroidery and appliqué – Tamil Nadu, Southern India, circa 1890–1930. A large handmade ceremonial textile panel in cotton, decorated with appliqué inserts and polychrome embroidery. The ornamental device comprises stylized vegetal elements and angular mythological figures (comparable to the Yali or guardian lion), executed in red, green, black and ochre on an ivory background. The piece features two symmetrically embroidered inscriptions: one in the Latin alphabet, legible as "N.V.E.N.", and one in the Tamil alphabet, corresponding to "நா.வ டி.நா" (Nā.Va Di.Nā). The bilingual double marking constitutes an identifying acronym (family or commercial), a customary practice among the wealthy merchant communities of South India, such as the Chettiar, active in colonial trade routes. The four rectangular openings integrated into the composition and finished at the edges indicate a precise structural function. The textile was presumably intended for ceremonial covering of a processional cart (Ratha or Ther Seelai) or for a canopy over altars, where the gaps allowed the passage of wooden elements, supporting poles, or anchor points. The execution technique, iconographic apparatus, and the Tamil inscription place the production in the Tamil Nadu region. Overall good condition given the age. It shows widespread staining, yellowing of the base fabric, folds from storage, and signs of use consistent with its age. The fabric structure, embroidery, and appliqué are generally well preserved.
