Beautiful and rare French Art Deco vase, ‘Cherbourg’, made by the renowned Verrerie Souchon-Neuvesel from Givors, France. The model is documented in specialized catalog material from the 1920s as ‘Cherbourg’, catalog number 3215. On the bottom of this vase you will find the original factory/form number S/N 253. Color The vase is executed in a warm powder pink to salmon pink shade and made of heavy, matte pressed glass (verre dépoli). The color is so subtle and distinctive that it is difficult to capture in photography. It is certainly not rosé de bain, but a beautiful powder pink. The ample, elegantly rounded form is decorated with a stunning relief of stylized flying swallows, combined with a geometric pattern. The design marks a characteristic transition between late Art Nouveau and early Art Deco. Authenticity and documentation. The underside is, during the molding process, provided with the original relief marking bearing the S/N monogram of Souchon-Neuvesel and the number 253. The combination of form, decoration, color, and this original mold mark matches the documented model ‘Cherbourg’. In catalog material, Cherbourg is listed as number 3215, while S/N 253 is the corresponding factory/form number. This combination makes the vase particularly interesting for collectors of French pressed glass. The design is generally dated around 1925 in specialized sources. This specimen is dated 1920–1925. About the maker Verrerie Souchon-Neuvesel was based in Givors and had a history dating back to 1864, when the Nouvelles Verreries de Givors were founded there. Under Eugène Souchon, the company grew in the early twentieth century into an important French producer of hollow glass and bottles, for instance for well-known mineral water brands such as Évian, Vittel and Vals. In 1920 the company officially took the name Verrerie Souchon-Neuvesel. In the twenties, production was further modernized and mechanized, making the factory one of the major French glass producers of its time. The industrial history of Souchon-Neuvesel later continued in the formation of Boussois-Souchon-Neuvesel (BSN) in 1966, a group that ultimately became part of the Danone story. This vase is thus not only a lovely Art Deco object but also a fine example of French industrial glass production in the interwar period. Condition The vase is in excellent, largely undamaged condition, with only minimal signs of aging. • No chips, fleabites, or cracks at the neck rim or foot ring. • No obstructive or ingrained lime scale from flower water. • The glass is clear and fresh. • A few very small air bubbles (bulles) may be present in the glass. These are characteristic of the historical pressing process and do not constitute damage.
