About the artist: Arman (actually Armand Pierre Fernandez) was born in 1928 in Nice and died in 2005 in New York. The French object artist was one of the most important members and co-founders of the group "Nouveaux Réalistes". Arman attended the art school in Nice and in Paris the École du Louvre and the École National des Arts Décoratifs. His object pictures were exhibited in many European cities. Arman was already on friendly terms with Yves Klein early on. He began dipping objects such as chains, cans, keys and the like into ink and printing them onto paper. In doing so, Arman paid increasing attention to the individual, pre-formed object. Thus there were rubbish bins or waste-paper baskets with used products of our consumer goods industry. Followed by accumulations of similar objects, such as radio tubes, gears or ampoules - usually in Plexiglas cases. Arman operated with the given material as a painter with a brush and paint. He composed, but also allowed chance a considerable space. The unique character of Arman’s works lies in the fusion of objects and portraits from the world of music and technology. He virtuously mastered the art of making music visible. Arman received in 1964 the 2nd prize at the Tokyo Biennale and in 1966 the Grand Prize Marzotto. In 1968 he was entrusted with teaching at the University of California (UCLA). In 1968 he was also represented at the Venice Biennale and the documenta in Kassel. His famous paintings and sculptures can be found in all major art metropolises. About the artwork: Roland Garros is the traditional home of the Internationaux de France held annually; the tennis tournament is better known worldwide as the French Open. This is one of the official posters that were designed and created each year for the tennis tournament at Roland Garros.
