The new expression is presented as a 15-year-old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky. According to information released by the brand, the whisky has matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, charred new oak and Oloroso sherry butts. This maturation structure is significant because it allows the whisky’s profile to be read from three different angles. Ex-bourbon casks typically bring notes of vanilla, coconut, yellow fruit and cereal sweetness. Charred new oak, when used with precision, can heighten the spicy impression, structure and certain toasted nuances. Oloroso, meanwhile, adds a darker, more enveloping dimension, with echoes of nuts, cocoa, spices and ripe fruit. In a spirit as peat-driven as Ardbeg, this combination can act as a counterpoint, rounding out the experience without erasing its smoky DNA. Trudernish is bottled at 48.8% ABV, a strength above the standard for many commercial whiskies and in keeping with the distillery’s profile. The brand also states that it is presented non-chill filtered and with no added colouring, two details valued by enthusiasts looking for a more direct expression of the spirit and the wood.
