Antonius de Vercellis - Sermones quadragesimales fratris...

First edition of the Pentecost sermons by Vercellis From the Franciscan monastery of Besançon, 1492 Author Antonius de Vercellis (1430-1483) Title Sermones quadragesimales de XII mirabilibus christianae fidel excellentiis. With additions by Ludovicus Brognolo. Printer Johannes and Gregorius de Gregoriis, Venice, 16/11/1492/93. Last leaf with colophon and dating. Description First edition of the Pentecost sermons of the Franciscan friar of the Observants, a prolific writer who is identifiable under the name Antonius de Balacho. He hails from Balacco near Vercelli in Piedmont. This edition is also the only incunabula edition; after 1500 eleven further editions followed. In his Pentecost sermons the author discusses the “Twelve Wonders of Christian Faith,” in reference to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit during the so‑called “Pentecost miracle,” when the twelve apostles, together with Mary after Christ’s death, gathered and, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit poured over them and sent them as apostles of the mission into the world. Particularly interesting in this copy is the 15th‑century motto written in French on the back flyleaf: “Qui a filles, vignes et vieilles maisons Il a des affaires en toute saisons ...”, – …“Who has daughters, vineyards and old houses, he has business in every season ...” …signed by a “p. Notarij.” Equipment Two-column Gothic type in 51 lines. Empty initial spaces and a woodcut printer’s mark at the end. Chapter headings and the first five lines in red ink. Format: 16 x 11.5 cm. Page measurements: 21.6 x 15.2 cm. Collation 263 numbered leaves; 5 unnumbered leaves. Complete. Signature formula: 268 leaves a-z8; ä8; ö8; ü8; A-G8; j4. Binding Original leather binding of the period. Blind‑stamped calfskin over pasteboard covers. Diagonal stroke lines. Lilies in the fields. Back and corners carefully restored with substantial preservation of the original substance. Good condition with signs of wear. Binding and book block solid and stable.
