Typically Fontanesian, in this painting (which also bears the signs of a somewhat troubled conservation), the light, airy transparencies of the branches that form a backdrop on the right side still appear, as the highlights and underscoring of certain contour lines of the figures, intended to constitute a sort of clearly marked, molded plastic. It can finally be noted that the motif of this "study" essentially provided the compositional idea (with variants in the background to be traced back, however, to other well-known Fontanesian schemes) for a large-format canvas, also polished, strangely, devoid of a signature, from which an authentication issued by Marziano Bernardi, in Turin, dated July 23, 1956, with the concordant attribution to Antonio Fontanesi, remedied the issue. To speculate on the reasons for the lack of a signature (from the fortuitous to those of greater substance) could yield a range of possibilities: from the "study" that the painter conceived mainly as personal practice to abandonment by an author who was dissatisfied, or more simply attributing it to the relocation to London and Florence of a Fontanesi led to disposing of his Geneva studio, while he was already settling in Turin soon thereafter, not refraining from the generous venture of a mastership in Japan". All these factors do not change the substance of the work and the technical-esthetic motivations that make it an undeniable work by Antonio Fontanesi, datable around 1865.
