Antonio Citterio per B&B Italia Raro sistema modulare di...

ANTONIO CITTERIO FOR B&B ITALIA – TWO “SITY” MODULAR ARMCHAIRS – EARLY PRODUCTION, 1987 Rare pair of modular armchairs belonging to the Sity seating system, designed by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia and awarded the Compasso d’Oro ADI in 1987. The two elements originate from an important original composition consisting of six modules, manufactured on 5 January 1987 and now offered through separate lots. This lot includes exclusively the two armchairs illustrated in the photographs, comprising a total of 2 modules. Each seat is complete with its respective original seat and back cushions. An icon of Italian design One of the most important projects in late 20th-century Italian design, Sity profoundly renewed the traditional concept of the sofa. Designed by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia, the system introduced a new vision of contemporary living: no longer a single static element, but a genuine domestic architecture composed of freely configurable modules capable of adapting to different spaces and ways of living. The historical importance of the project was recognised in 1987 with the Compasso d’Oro ADI, Italy’s most prestigious industrial design award. The jury acknowledged the typologically advanced nature of the system and its ability to interpret the evolution of contemporary living while radically renewing the concept of domestic upholstered furniture. Sity is still regarded as one of the most influential seating systems produced by B&B Italia and one of the defining works of Antonio Citterio’s career. With remarkable foresight, it anticipated the flexible and modular approach to living spaces that would characterise design in the following decades. Early 1987 production The two armchairs belong to the model’s early production, as confirmed by the original B&B Italia labels and the documentation relating to the complete composition, dated 5 January 1987. Both modules retain their refined original B&B Italia upholstery, combining salmon-coloured fabric on the structures with the original multicoloured geometric pattern of the cushions. Typical of the finest Italian production of the 1980s, this colour combination gives the chairs a strong graphic personality and emphasises their architectural lines. The abstract upholstery pattern incorporates shades of blue, green, pink, salmon, black and beige, creating an elegant contrast with the plain surfaces of the structures. The two armchairs may be used independently, placed together as a pair or combined with the other elements of the original composition, which are offered separately. Comfort and construction quality As with the most important B&B Italia productions of the period, comfort is an integral part of the design. The structure is made from profiled steel with original Bayfit padding, an innovative cold-moulded polyurethane foam developed to provide elasticity, durability and consistent support over time. The seat cushions retain their original Dacron DuPont filling, a high-performance material used by B&B Italia to ensure comfort, resilience and dimensional stability even after prolonged use. The back cushions are entirely filled with 100% goose down, providing exceptional softness. The balance between the support of Bayfit, the resilience of Dacron DuPont and the natural softness of goose down creates an exceptionally comfortable seating experience, making Sity one of the most sophisticated seating systems produced by B&B Italia. Originality and preservation The two armchairs retain their original steel frames, Bayfit padding, cushions with their original fillings, 1987 B&B Italia upholstery, feet, labels and original components. The only conservation work carried out over the years concerns the replacement of the lower dust covers facing the floor. The original covers had deteriorated with age and were replaced with equivalent elements. No work was performed on the structures, padding or original upholstery. The chairs were recently professionally cleaned and conservatively sanitised to preserve their materials and originality. The structures remain intact, the padding retains excellent elasticity and the original upholstery displays only light and natural signs of use consistent with age. Contents of the lot This lot includes: 2 original Sity modules suitable for use as armchairs; 2 original seat cushions filled with Dacron DuPont; 2 large original back cushions filled with 100% goose down; original B&B Italia labels attached to the modules.
