Antoine Galland - Les mille et une nuits - 1837

Splendid two-volume set of this edition which constitutes one of the French versions most influential of this vast narrative cycle drawn from the literary traditions of the Near East - The work gathers a series of framed tales within the famous narrative framework where Scheherazade tells each night a story to the sultan to defer his condemnation and gradually transform his view of the world - This structure gives rise to a bustling universe where adventures, romantic intrigues, wondrous tales, extraordinary journeys, magic, justice and social satire mingle. The stories feature merchants, princes, slaves, genies, caliphs and anonymous heroes, offering a multifaceted portrait of real and imagined Eastern societies - Galland’s translation, far from being a purely literal restitution, adapts these tales to the European taste of the eighteenth century, giving them narrative fluidity and stylistic elegance that have largely contributed to their lasting success - Antoine Galland - The Thousand and One Nights - 1837 - Volume I and II - Furne & Cie - 518 & 560 Pages.
