Characteristics and style An Oushak kilim is characterized by its flatweave technique, which makes it thinner and often more versatile than knotted carpets. The design is defined by: Generous patterns: Typically expansive, geometric or stylized floral medallions and borders. Color: They are famous for their soft, often pastel tones such as terracotta, cream, cinnamon, and faded blue, produced by natural plant-based dyes. Suzani influence: If you use the term “Suzani” (or Suzani), this often points to a combination of techniques. Originally, suzanis are embroidered textiles from Central Asia. A rug in Suzani style combines the flatwoven base with fine, often circular embroidery (“sun” or “wheel”), which gives the carpet a particularly detailed texture.
