Antique Ring with Burmese Sapphire and Diamonds in Silver and Gold

Rubies from Burma are world-famous and highly sought-after. However, sapphires are also found in this gemstone-rich region of our planet and their quality is often just as good as that of rubies. In fact, both gemstones, rubies and sapphires, belong to the same mineral family, the corundum. Only the cause of the color is different: traces of chromium in the ruby and traces of iron and titanium in the blue sapphire. This ring presents a large, intensely blue sapphire from Burma. The stone is cabochon cut, which really brings out the color of the stone. The stone, which weighs around 4.77 ct, is blue without appearing inky, heavy or dark. It appears soft, almost velvety. Under the microscope, its interior reveals some inclusions, minerals and liquid films. However, the overall impression is clear and transparent. In addition, the stone has not been heated and its color is completely natural. Only slight traces of oil can be detected in the stone. Sixteen diamonds in old cuts surround the stone, making the ring a classic entourage ring. The diamonds are set in silver, while the ring band is made of slightly reddish gold. The fineness of 375/000 indicates that it was created in Great Britain. The workmanship in silver and rose gold as well as the slender design with the ring shoulders tapered into lilies reveal that the ring was created in the late 19th century. The ring was always loved and worn and was therefore restored in earlier times. The prongs and settings of the gemstones were reinforced where necessary and some of the diamonds were renewed. We discovered the ring in Zurich. An independent expert opinion on the quality of the materials is enclosed with the ring.
