Antique Gold Pendant Shaped as an African Elephant, Great Britain c. 1905

An African elephant with impressive ears and mighty tusks meets us in this pendant. Two diamonds set its eyes and give the pachyderm an alert look. A large loop leads to the modern gold chain, which we have added to the antique pendant. The pendant dates back to the years when the British Empire ruled over a quarter of the world's population and also conquered numerous colonies in Africa, where elephants were at home. At the end of the 19th century, Great Britain consolidated its control over large parts of East Africa. With the construction of the Uganda Railway (1896-1901), the interior of the country became more accessible. As a result, European settlers, military personnel and wealthy travelers were able to reach regions known for their large game populations relatively easily for the first time. The term "safari" (from Swahili: safiri - to travel) became synonymous with organized hunting expeditions during this time. Wealthy Europeans and Americans traveled to East Africa to take part in hunts lasting several weeks. Big game hunting in British East Africa c. 1900 was a central part of colonial culture. It combined adventure, prestige and economic interests. This pendant, which we can date to the years around or shortly after c. 1900, was probably created in this context. Crafted from slightly reddish, high-carat gold, the pendant was originally finished in fine gold, typical of the period. Perhaps it is a memento of a stay on the African continent - or perhaps it is evidence of the original wearer's pride in the new colonies?
