Until not so long ago, brooches were an indispensable piece of jewelry. Around 1950, no lady would have left the house without a brooch, because a dress was not complete without one. How and where the brooch was worn on clothing changed according to the respective fashions. In the early years of the last century, the so-called "collar brooch" was popular, which was worn on the front of the blouse at around the height of the top button on high-necked garments. The present example is one such collar brooch. The diamond-shaped piece of jewelry is made of 14-karat gold and features a design that was at the height of fashion in the years around 1910. Similar designs were also executed in Russia in those years by the court jeweler to the tsars, Carl Fabergé: Details such as pastel-colored enamels, floral band decorations and laurel leaves were intended to create a reference to the time of Louis XVI, interpreted according to a new century. The oval central field presents a small diamond against a wavy guilloché ground with dove-blue translucent enamel. According to the hallmark, the brooch was made in the Kaeser & Walter jewelry factory in Pforzheim. It is beautifully preserved and a typical piece of jewelry from the late Belle Époque.
