Antique Crucifix - Golden metal - Circa 1900 - Antique altar crucifix - 47 cm

Large antique crucifix for an altar/table, approximately 47 cm tall, entirely handmade in heavy metal with a gilded finish. Circa 1900, attributable to the Neogothic / French Troubadour taste. Handcrafted work with hand-riveted fittings and rivets: The Corpus Christi is anchored to the cross by old pins riveted by hammer. At the joints and around the pins, the original gilding has worn away with time, revealing the oxidized metal with the dark/black tone typical of ancient metalwork. The Christ is depicted in a classical yet essential pose: the face and anatomical details show evident signs of aging and porosity of the cast/hammered metal, with a tactile surface and natural corrosion accumulated over the centuries. On the back of the transverse arm are the letters "J" and "C". The letters are hand-engraved/hammered individually, as evidenced by their archaic and asymmetrical form. "J" and "C" stand for Jesus Christus (Jesus Christ in Latin). The cross features arms terminating in starry/leafed tips and a central ray, supported by a solid hexagonal base. General Conditions: Very good considering the object's age. Structurally solid and intact in all major components. Strong patina of age with gilding worn at points of greatest contact and presence of oxidation and natural darkening of the metal. As visible from the close-up photos, one ray/point of the crown of thorns around the head is broken at one point. Origin and Provenance: France (Neogothic / Troubadour style) Material: Heavy metal with gilding Total height: about 47 cm Cross width: 23 cm Base: 13.5 x 15.5 cm
