Antique Belle Époque Necklace with Diamonds in Silver on Gold, Vienna, c. 1905

With the introduction of gas light and later electric light towards the end of the 19th century, the atmosphere in Europe's ballrooms changed fundamentally. The subdued candlelight was replaced by uniform, bright lighting that showed off pieces of jewellery to much greater advantage. In this context, a new jewellery fashions established itself: so-called white jewels made of diamonds and silver. They responded to the changed lighting conditions and replaced more intensely colored designs. Jewellery was increasingly set with diamonds in order to maximize the lighting effect and achieve a prestigious, luxurious appearance. Accordingly, necklaces, tiaras, brooches and rings set with diamonds dominated the grand balls in Paris, London and St. Petersburg. The necklace presented here comes from Vienna and is set with a total of 18 diamonds weighing around 0.60 carats. The stones in various historical cuts are set in silver, which enhances their slightly warm shine. The back of the pendant is made of gold to prevent it from rubbing off on clothing - a typical finish for the period. In terms of design, the piece also corresponds to the c. 1900 style: balanced, slightly playful and symmetrical. Floral elements, for example in the form of abstract leaves and tendrils, enliven the design. A movably suspended drop with two diamonds also provides lively light reflections. This well-preserved piece of jewellery came to us from Munich.
