Antique Arts & Crafts Pendant with Diamonds and Pearls in Gold and

Plant growth processes and organic forms were among the most important sources of inspiration for Art Nouveau. Against the backdrop of industrialization and rapidly growing cities, artists around 1900 were looking for a new, contemporary formal language that could be understood as an alternative to historical stylistic copy and technical rationality. The turn to nature was not purely decorative, but programmatic: organic structures, rhythm and movement were intended to re-establish a connection between man, art and the environment. The present pendant, presumably made in Great Britain, belongs to this environment. In contrast to French Art Nouveau designs of the time, for example, the design is characterized by simplified, abstract forms reminiscent of Arts & Crafts creations. One of the most important designers was Archibald Knox, whose designs this pendant is also reminiscent of. Knox frequently used the leaf motif in particular, which frames the round pendant; in the English-speaking world, the motif is called "stylized honesty", the stylized heart-shaped leaf of the persistent silver leaf (Lunaria rediviva). Two shimmering natural pearls and five small diamonds round off the design, which is made from high-carat yellow gold and platinum. With a fine platinum chain, the well-preserved piece of jewellery can be worn immediately around the neck.
