Antique Art Nouveau Brooch with Diamonds and Enamel, Paris, c. 1900

Shortly before the turn of the century, people were searching for a style befitting the new century. The 1900 Paris World’s Fair, where competing world powers showcased their most innovative products to an international audience, gave these efforts fresh impetus. The jewellery in the new Art Nouveau style displayed at this exhibition was talked about everywhere: it was artistic, sophisticated, unconventional, and full of symbolism. Yet just a few years later, Art Nouveau was already considered passé—it had become a victim of its own success. As it was mass-produced time and again in factories, its essence was diluted: the handcrafted nature of the pieces and their status as unique works of art. Thus, true Art Nouveau flourished for only a brief moment. As a result, Art Nouveau jewels in the original sense—that is, those that emphasize unique craftsmanship, unconventional materials, and artistic design—are actually very rare. This brooch is one such jewel. Set among diamond-encrusted tendrils, it features two pine cones in finely modeled gold, nestled among long needles that appear to be swaying in the wind. A delicate, translucent enamel coating bathes the design in ethereal shades ranging from gold to orange and green. The technique is innovative and clever: The centerpiece of the brooch is made of cloisonné enamel. The gold wires, between which the dove-blue enamel is poured, are arranged in such a way that the botanical motif on the front completely conceals them, making it appear as though they are floating against an autumnal, stormy sky. The pine cone was a recurring motif in French Art Nouveau, particularly featuring long, stylized needles. A pocket watch by Lalique, also featuring a pine motif, is on display at the MAD Paris, for example, see here. The piece of jewellery is marked with French maker's marks, which unfortunately are illegible. To date, we have not found an illustration in any relevant turn-of-the-century publication that would allow for an attribution—but it is certain that both the design and the craftsmanship attest to an innovative approach to form and high standards of quality. This is, therefore, a piece about which the final word has not yet been spoken.
