Antiek 19e-eeuws winkelblik – “Boekw

Antique 19th-century shop tin – “Boekw. meel” – buckwheat flour – hand-painted red with gold lettering A special and very decorative 19th-century shop or storage tin, executed in warm red with a beautiful gold-colored, ornate inscription: “Boekw. meel” – the historical abbreviation for buckwheat flour. This type of large storage tin used to stand in a grocer’s or spice shop, where flour and other dry goods were weighed from larger stock for the customer. Buckwheat played an important role in this. The Dutch Open Air Museum describes how grocers not only sold buckwheat groats but also much finer ground buckwheat flour, among other things for buckwheat pancakes. Historical price lists also use the abbreviation “meel (boekw.)” for buckwheat flour. The tin is made of metal/tin and has a cylindrical shape with a loose, slightly bulging lid. The profiled rims at the top and bottom give the piece extra strength and a handsome, classic appearance. The gold-colored calligraphic inscription against the red background forms the absolute focal point of the piece. The execution fits well within the tradition of Dutch shop tins from the end of the 19th century. For comparison: museum-standard Dutch shop tins from circa 1890 are also known in a tall cylindrical form, hand-painted and adorned with gold-colored decoration and inscriptions. A splendid piece of Dutch shop history and a striking decorative object for a collection of antique tins, old grocer’s wares, shop interiors, or country-style home décor. Characteristics * Object: shop tin / stock tin * Inscription: “Boekw. meel” * Meaning: buckwheat flour * Origin: probably the Netherlands * Period: 19th century, presumably second half / end of the 19th century * Material: tin / metal * Color: red with gold lettering * Form: cylindrical * Loose bulging lid * Profiling reinforcing edges * Beautiful graceful calligraphic lettering * Originally intended for use in a shop, grocer, or spice shop Condition Beautiful authentic antique condition with a particularly appealing patina of age. The surface shows signs of use, scratches, small areas with paint loss, discoloration and wear, especially along the protruding edges and lid. The gold-colored inscription also shows local minor aging wear. These signs are perfectly in line with the piece’s great age and original use as a shop stock tin and contribute to its authentic character. Signs of use are visible in the photos. A rare and atmospheric object that is more than just an old tin: a tangible remnant from a time when flour, groats, and other foodstuffs were weighed directly from large stock containers behind the counter. Dimensions Height 18 cm Diameter 16.5 cm The photos provide a clear impression of the quality and are part of the description. The interior photos have been AI-generated and are intended solely to illustrate the object in a home setting.
