RARE COLLECTION OF THE WORKS PUBLISHED BY CHRISTOPHOROS ANGELOS IN ENGLAND TO CONDEMN THE BRUTALITY OF THE TURKS AND MAKE THE CONDITION OF HIS COUNTRY KNOWN TO THE WEST. Almost complete collection of the works of Chr. Angelos (1575-1638), published between 1617 and 1624 (lacks Περί τῆς ἀποστασίας τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, all but the first in their extremely rare first editions). In order to escape the Turks and round out his education, the author took refuge in England in 1608. He initially settled in Trinity College of Cambridge and then in Balliol College Oxford, where he taught Greek. He lived in England until his death in 1638. This collection of his works comes from the famous Macclesfield library, which was created in the first half of the 18th century and its content remained unexplored until recently (see Sotheby’s, The Library of the Earls of Macclesfield removed from Shirburn Castle, part VIII, October 25 & 26 2006, no. 2466). No other first edition copy of a work by Chr. Angelos has appeared in auction in the last 40 years. Περί τῆς ἀποστασίας τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, The Library of the Earls of Macclesfield removed from Shirburn Castle Author: ANGELOS, Christoforos. Title: Christopher Angell, a Grecian, who tasted of many stripes and torments inflicted by the Turkes for the faith which he had in Christ Iesus. Publication info: Οξφόρδη, J. Lichfield & J. Short, 1618.
