Ancient Roman

Ancient Roman Silver Tessera with Imperial Portrait and Inscription Roman Imperial Period, circa 2nd–3rd century AD Material: Silver Weight: 3.9 g Dimensions: 22.9 × 20.9 × 7.3 mm From a Private European Collection. An exceptionally intriguing and very rare Ancient Roman silver tessera, distinguished by its remarkable imperial portrait, surviving inscription and unusual massive fabric. The obverse bears a strongly defined male portrait bust in profile, displaying unmistakably Roman imperial iconography. The figure appears to wear a laurel wreath, while the shoulder and upper body are visibly draped. The treatment of the portrait is strongly reminiscent of contemporary Roman imperial coinage and suggests that the engraver deliberately employed the familiar visual language of imperial authority. Of particular importance are the remains of an inscription surrounding the portrait. Several individual letters are still clearly recognizable, although the surviving legend does not presently allow a secure identification of the person represented. The combination of portrait and epigraphy gives the object an especially numismatic character. Despite this close relationship with Roman coin imagery, the object clearly differs from an ordinary circulating coin. Its remarkable thickness of approximately 7.3 mm, irregular form, substantial fabric and completely plain reverse are fundamentally different from the normal construction of a Roman silver denarius or antoninianus. The absence of an obvious suspension hole or channel is equally significant. Rather than a conventional seal intended to be attached by cord or wire, the physical characteristics are consistent with its interpretation as an independent tessera or token. Roman tesserae formed a fascinating and highly diverse category of objects. They could be associated with admission, distributions, privileges, identification, associations, administrative activities or other specialized purposes. Their exact function frequently depended upon a context that is no longer preserved, making unusual surviving examples an intriguing field of Roman archaeology and numismatics. Silver tesserae are considerably more unusual than the numerous surviving Roman examples produced in lead or bronze, making the present piece particularly noteworthy. Its silver fabric, imperial-style portrait and surviving inscription create an exceptional combination rarely encountered among Roman minor objects. The remarkably coin-like imagery may have been intended to convey imperial authority or official association, while its non-monetary construction demonstrates that it served a fundamentally different purpose from circulating Roman currency. A highly distinctive and enigmatic piece of Roman material culture – combining precious metal, imperial portraiture, epigraphy and the mysterious function of the Roman tessera in one remarkable object.
