Background Information: This bronze finger ring dates to the Late Roman Imperial period and features a broad oval bezel decorated with a series of engraved ring-and-dot motifs. This simple geometric ornament was one of the most enduring decorative patterns of Roman metalwork and appears on jewellery, military equipment, harness fittings, domestic objects, and personal accessories throughout the Empire. The ring-and-dot motif was created by punching or engraving concentric circles around a central point. Besides its decorative appeal, this design has long been associated with apotropaic symbolism. In Roman art, circular motifs resembling stylised eyes were widely believed to offer protection against misfortune and the evil eye (fascinatio), making them especially suitable for personal jewellery intended to accompany the wearer in daily life. While the precise symbolic meaning of individual examples cannot always be determined, such ornamentation was deeply rooted in Roman decorative tradition. Bronze rings of this type were worn by men and women across all levels of Roman society. Unlike precious metal jewellery reserved for the elite, bronze examples provided durable and affordable personal ornaments suitable for everyday use. Some served as simple decorative rings, while others reflected the owner's beliefs, identity, or desire for symbolic protection. The ring was cast in bronze and subsequently finished by hand before the bezel was carefully engraved with its geometric decoration. Workshops throughout the Roman Empire produced similar jewellery using standardised techniques, and such rings circulated widely through military movements, trade networks, and local markets, reaching provinces from Britain and Gaul to the Danube frontier and the eastern Mediterranean. Dating to the 2nd–4th century A.D., this ring belongs to a period during which personal adornment remained an important aspect of Roman daily life. The continued popularity of the ring-and-dot motif illustrates the persistence of traditional decorative forms and protective symbolism well into Late Antiquity."
