Ancient Roman

Roman bronze anatomical votive offering depicting a leg and foot – 1st–3rd centuries CE. Attributed culture: Roman Empire Proposed chronology: 1st–3rd centuries CE Material: Cast bronze Typology: Votive anatomical representation. Interesting anatomical representation in bronze of a human leg with the bare foot, made through simple modeling but of great expressiveness. The piece features a stylized lower limb, with a marked curvature in its profile and a carefully differentiated foot, in which the instep and the individual toes can be discerned. This type of anatomical representations is related to the votive and religious practices of the Roman world. The faithful offered reproductions of different parts of the body to the protective deities of health, especially Asclepius, god of medicine, as a petition for healing or gratitude for a disease overcome. The surface preserves an attractive light green and olive patina, with mineral deposits and earthy tones that emphasize its archaeological character. An evocative piece of Antiquity that allows us to approach the beliefs, rituals and healing practices of Roman society about two thousand years ago. Of special interest to collectors of Roman archaeology, votive bronzes and instruments related to the history of medicine.
