These fragments typically belonged to the elaborate anthropoid coffins of elite individuals, where eyes played a crucial symbolic and protective role. In ancient Egyptian religion, the eyes were not merely features of a face, but powerful apotropaic symbols associated with divine vision, rebirth, and eternal watchfulness in the afterlife. The use of bronze for these fragments highlights the high status of the deceased. While most coffin eyes were painted or made of wood, glass, and inlaid stone, bronze added durability, prestige, and a gleaming metallic sheen that symbolized the imperishable bodies of the gods, whose flesh was mythologically believed to be made of gold. Artisans crafted these pieces with meticulous care, often accentuating the iconic cosmetic lines characteristic of the divine gaze, mirroring the sacred Eye of Horus (Wedjat).
