Paris, at Editions Littéraires de France, 1946. 1 volume in-4 (28.5 x 22.5 cm), loose in sheets under a titled dust jacket on the upper cover, a spine-titled slipcase, illustrated box with revolutionary seals and stamps on the plates, 286-[5] pages (complete). Very good overall condition with a very fresh interior. Illustrated with wood engravings by Valentin Le Campion. Limited edition of 475 copies. One of 394 on Rives BFK vellum (no. 259). Anatole France (1844-1924) becomes one of the most significant consciences of his time by supporting numerous social and political causes of the early twentieth century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his body of work in 1921. He has been one of the most important literary critics of his century. Les Dieux ont soif, published in 1912, is of evident classicism. The language is elevated, the vocabulary and historical references are carefully studied, without weighing down the fluid style and the short chapters, to be read in Vendémiaire as in Thermidor. Good copy.
