Tutte le aste / Medaglie, Armi & Armature / AN INDIAN GOLD-DAMASCENED STEEL KNIFE WITH HOLLOW GRIP AND ANIMAL-HEAD POMMEL

Ca. AD 18001900 An Indian steel knife of unusual construction, featuring a hollow grip and blade, apparently designed to accommodate a smaller concealed knife. The elongated blade is straight, tapering towards a pointed tip, with a gently curved shoulder decorated with elaborate gold koftgari work. The cylindrical grip is richly embellished with dense floral and vegetal scrollwork in gold, extending across its entire surface. The detachable pommel is modelled in the form of a stylised ram's head, with carefully defined facial features and contrasting gold decoration. Small lateral projections are visible on either side of the grip. The steel surface displays a dark patina with areas of wear and oxidation Size: 29.2mm Provenance: Private London collection; US art market, before 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
