An English large-scale artist’s studio palette or colour tray, reputed to have come from the studio of Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. (1727 - 1788) of rectangular form, with a broad central mixing surface enclosed by raised sides divided into numerous deep, angled colour wells, retaining extensive historic paint residues in blue, green, yellow, red, ochre, brown and black pigments; the reverse formed as a plain stained wooden panel, 61 x 78cm Provenance: Reputed to have been acquired by the studio of Thomas Gainsborough, although no documentation confirming this attribution is present
