An Ancient Roman carnelian intaglio engraved with a complex figural and symbolic composition, at the centre a human figure is seated or crouching low to the ground, facing left, the legs folded beneath or before the body and the torso bent forwards, the figure extends both hands towards a basket or vessel placed immediately in front, above which is a diminutive insect-like creature, probably an ant, an eagle with broad outspread wings occupies the upper left of the field, while a group of tall plants or seed-bearing stems rises to the right, likely 1st-2nd Century A.D, later mounted into an unmarked gold ring, likely in the 19th century, size O, 2.4 grams, presented in a later jeweller’s box marked C.C Allen.
