(American School, 19th Century), Portrait of Mahlon Hutchinson (1754-1836) Depicting an older gentleman seated half-length in a gray coat and cream vest. Dimensions: 30 in. x 24 3/4 in.; 39 in. x 33 1/2 in. (framed) Mahlon Hutchinson was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1754 and married Sarah Palmer in 1779. The couple had at least eight children and lived in Philadelphia, where Mahlon was a wealthy merchant. The family is depicted in an intricate needlework picture worked in 1806 by one of their daughters, Ann, with Mahlon seated beneath a tree (the piece is now in the collection of the Allentown (PA) Art Museum). Another, unworked, version painted on silk is offered in this sale. Provenance: from descendants of Elizabeth Morris Wistar. Condition Under UV light, areas of inpainting apparent below left ear and at right side of necktie, as well as spot at top center of canvas. Puncture hole to canvas at upper left quadrant. Some areas of craquelure to paint. Later stretcher bears label for Janentzky & Co., Philadelphia on verso. Giltwood frame with losses to gesso and gilding.
