Acadêmicien de France, he devoted over twenty years of his life to the composition of the monumental work Grande Flore en couleurs de la France. Georges de Layens (1834–1897): He was a noted naturalist and above all one of the fathers of modern beekeeping. He developed the eponymous "Layens" hive, a horizontally developed model still widely used in Europe (especially in Spain).
