A Catalan painter with a vocation for landscape, he developed a figurative painting marked by a notable influence from Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. His artistic production focused mainly on depicting rural landscapes, Mediterranean towns, gardens, and traditional corners of Catalonia, showing a special sensitivity to natural light and the chromatic variations of the landscape. His style was characterized by a loose, spontaneous, and vigorous brushstroke, with abundant paint and a palette dominated by intense greens, ochres, blues, and warm tones. Rivas sought to capture the atmosphere and essence of the places depicted, giving greater importance to the expression of color and light than to meticulous detail. His compositions conveyed serenity and freshness, combining a recognizable figurative structure with a free and expressive execution, typical of the Catalan landscape tradition of the 20th century. His painting can be placed within Catalan post-Impressionist landscape painting, with influences from naturalism and chromatic expressionism.
