Alfred de Musset – Complete Works – 59 etchings by Adolphe Lalauze – half dark morocco binding with corners – large format – circa 1883 Description Magnificent illustrated edition of Alfred de Musset’s Works, gathered in a single imposing large-format volume. The work includes, notably: * Poésies * Comédies et proverbes * La Confession d’un enfant du siècle * Nouvelles et contes * Mélanges de littérature et de critique * Œuvres posthumes Remarkably illustrated edition with 59 aquatint engravings by Adolphe Lalauze, after drawings by Eugène Lami. The engravings are presented as plates or at the head of the different parts, several protected by their serpente (guard). The work would also include a facsimile of a letter by Alexandre Dumas. The first illustrated page bears the inscriptions: E. Lami inv. – Ad. Lalauze sc. – D. Morgand, édit. The title page states: Paris, Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle – Eugène Fasquelle, éditeur, 11 rue de Grenelle. An old pencil annotation reads “Édition de 1883.” This date corresponds to the Lalauze illustrated edition, but the copy showing no printed date visible on the title page should be described as a late 19th-century edition, established from the 1883 illustrated edition. Binding Very beautiful period binding in half brown morocco with corners, with: * covers covered in marbled paper; * spine with raised bands richly ornamented with gold motifs and stamped in blind; * title and author’s name gilded on the spine; * gilded borders; * gilded top edge; * marbled endpapers. This is a particularly decorative work, large in size and making a striking presence in a library. Binding solid and decorative, with some wear and signs of use on the joints, headbands, corners, and covers. Gibecures on the spine’s gilding remains fairly bright. Interior showing foxing, pinholes and browning of varying degrees, more pronounced on certain pages and serpents. Some old handwritten notes on the endpapers. The engravings remain well preserved and offer nice contrasts. Photographs are an integral part of the description. Shipped with insured tracking.
