Alexandrine Zola

Long autograph letter signed by Alexandrine Zola, addressed to Mr. Thyébaut, dated February 25, 1894. Written in black ink on a double sheet of laid paper. In this letter, Alexandrine Zola speaks with sadness of the distance and the unexplained silence of the writer Henry Céard toward her and her husband, and also mentions Madame Charpentier regarding a place in Pouponnière. « My dear Thyébaut, I knew that there was no room at the Pouponnière before August, unless by then, for one reason or another, a vacancy appeared. Nevertheless, I have communicated your request to Madame Charpentier, who regrets endlessly that she cannot be agreeable, neither to you nor to me. I am upset myself not to be able to be of help to your protégé. You speak to me of Céard, my dear friend, and it is with a heavy heart that I answer the part of your letter relating to him. You tell me that we are not the only ones he neglects; believe me, we are not the only ones neglected, judge for yourself. I wrote to our friend, fifteen days ago, to invite him to dine last Thursday. I told him that, as he knew me very nervous [word struck out], he would please reply as soon as possible. I am still waiting for his response. What do you think of that? Finally, since it’s a bit roundabout, as you say, perhaps the beacon will one day shine for us. Neither my husband nor I have done anything to explain his attitude toward us. He can come back whenever he wants; it is certain that we will always have for him our old and warm affection. The household sends you both their very affectionate regards.» Dimensions: 13 x 14.8 cm Condition: Fine state of preservation. See photos for more details.
