Alexandre Bougault (XIX) - Bédouins du désert

Circa 1900, 22x28 cm. "Bedouins of the Desert", a very beautiful vintage silver print from the period, toned with selenium salts (warm color shift), large format, in very good conservation, with preserved contrasts, gray nuances and levels of detail from Very Good to Superb, by Alexandre Bougault. The print’s interest lies in not being mounted on an album page or cardboard backing, which is rare. Signed with a dry seal at the bottom right of the print. Deserves framing. Will be shipped with its neutral pH sleeve (ideal for a collection kept in good condition). Based in Biskra at the end of the 19th century, Alexandre Bougault opened a workshop in the heart of an oasis then heavily frequented by European travelers. He developed a local production blending portraits, religious figures and scenes of daily life. His photographs are distinguished by sober framing, soft light and meticulous attention to faces, fabrics and textures, giving his subjects an embodied intensity.
