Alessandro Milesi (Venice, 1856 – Venice, 1945) Title: Popolana Technique: Oil on panel Framed dimensions: 47 x 35 cm Painting dimensions: 26.5 × 14.5 cm Signature: lower right Period: between the late 19th and early 20th century Description of the work The painting depicts a young Venetian common woman absorbed in a moment of contemplation, with her head slightly inclined and her gaze directed downward. The close-up framing concentrates attention on the figure, isolated from any precise environmental reference and built through a direct, painterly brushwork in which the chromatic matter plays a decisive role. The brushwork, swift and sabre-like, defines the face, hairstyle and dress without dwelling on minute description. A few more intense touches, particularly the reds of the face and the bodice, enliven a more restrained color range, while the background is resolved with light, vibrant passages. It is precisely this executional immediacy that gives the work the character of a study or a sketch, perhaps preparatory for a larger composition, in which Milesi seems to privilege the immediate rendering of attitude and expression over narrative definition. The subject fully belongs to the artist’s production devoted to the Venetian popular types, a theme Milesi repeatedly approached alongside his extensive activity as a portraitist. Compared to his more elaborate genre scenes, here the anecdotal element is reduced to a minimum: what remains is mainly the presence of the figure, captured with immediacy and with that freedom of brushwork that characterizes many of his most successful studies. Biographical notes Alessandro Milesi was born in Venice in 1856 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Napoleone Nani. After a period spent in Verona, he returned to Venice and quickly established himself as a leading interpreter of lagoon life, developing a language initially close to that of Giacomo Favretto but progressively freer in his painterly handling. Alongside genre scenes he devoted himself with particular success to portraiture, creating likenesses of numerous protagonists of the society and culture of his time. From 1895 he participated continuously in the Venice Biennale until 1935; in 1912 a solo exhibition of 38 works was dedicated to him. He also exhibited in numerous national and international venues, consolidating a reputation that made him one of the main figures of Venetian painting between the 19th and 20th centuries. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition, compatible with the age of the work. The paint surface is legible, with color well preserved overall and the signature visible in the lower left.
