ALBERT MARQUET (FRENCH 1875-1947) LE PONT DE CONFLANS Oil on canvas Signed (lower right) 64.5 x 80cm (25¼ x 31¼in.) Painted in 1911. Provenance: Adams Gallery, London Mayor Gallery, London (no. 4718) Acquired from the above by The Honourable Peter Samuel, 4th Viscount Bearsted (1911-1996), November 1963 And by descent This work is accompanied by an Attestation of Inclusion from the Wildenstein Institute, and it will be included in the forthcoming Marquet Digital Catalogue Raisonné, currently being prepared under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc. The village of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine sits to the west of Paris on the banks of the rivers Oise and Seine. Marquet stayed there in 1911 and produced a number of views of the river and the surrounding landscape. The present painting depicts the suspension bridge traversing the river Oise traditionally known as the Pont de Conflans or Fin d’Oise. Another view of Conflans, painted during the same trip entitled Paysage au Chaland depicting the railway bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel is held by The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (fig.1). As with so many Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters, Marquet was continually drawn to the landscape and waterways of the Ile-de-France. Painted in 1911, the present work demonstrates his gradual move away from the vivid tones of Fauvism and toward a softer and more naturalistic palette focussed on the broad expansive skies and the play of light and reflection on water. Pont de Conflans embodies Marquet’s use of his favoured hues of greyed violets and blues contrasted with the orange of the rooftops and the black lines of the boats and the bridge. Born in Bordeaux in 1875, Marquet moved to Paris in 1890 to study at the École des Arts Décoratifs. It was here that he met Matisse, a relationship that was to become one of the most enduring and productive in 20th century art. Rooted both in sincere friendship and mutual admiration, they frequently painted alongside each other and maintained a constant dialogue about their work. Marquet travelled widely throughout his career, both in Europe and north Africa, and these experiences informed his approach to painting, as well as his choice of subject matter. However, he remains best known as a landscape painter with works held in numerous public collections across France including Musée d’Orsay, Paris, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, as well as internationally - Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Hermitage, St. Petersburg and Tate Gallery, London amongst others.
