DESCRIPTION Evocative representation of the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes, one of the most important monumental ensembles of Catalan Gothic. The composition presents an exterior view of the church, with its characteristic bell tower, its Gothic portal, and a succession of cypress trees rising gracefully beside the monastic buildings. The architecture is interpreted through delicate ochre, gray and brown tones, accompanied by soft greenish hues in the vegetation. The scene preserves a serene and contemplative atmosphere, evoking historical Barcelona and the withdrawn character of this extraordinary medieval complex. 3. STYLISTIC, COMPOSITIVE AND EXPRESSIVE ANALYSIS The composition responds to a traditional landscape sensibility, interested both in depicting architectural heritage and in capturing its atmosphere. It stands out for the balance between the solidity of architectural volumes and the verticality of the cypresses, which introduce an elegant rhythm and add depth. The color range, deliberately restrained, is built from warm grays, ochres and delicate blue-green greens. The tonal gradations and the softness of the contours give the whole an intimate character, while the absence of human figures reinforces a sense of quiet and contemplation. The image possesses notable documentary and artistic charm, especially for its evocation of one of Barcelona’s most unique historical spaces. 4. PROPOSED AUTHORSHIP AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT The work shows a partially visible inscription that appears to correspond to the surname Antiga, compatible with known signatures of the Catalan painter Agustí Antiga Monner. Born in Barcelona in 1874 and died in 1942, Antiga Monner was a painter, watercolorist and draftsman, trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts. He developed a varied artistic production, including landscapes, portraits, seascapes and representations of urban environments. His career is documented through various exhibitions held in Barcelona during the first decades of the 20th century. Among them are his presentations at Galeries Laietanes, with documented exhibitions in 1930, 1934, 1935 and 1936. His interest in urban corners and traditional Catalan architecture constitutes a relevant contextual element for studying the present composition. The relationship of this image to Agustí Antiga Monner is proposed as a hypothesis based on the inscription and the artistic context. There is no documentation that definitively confirms authorship nor the original or reproduced nature of the piece. 5. OTHER NOTES OF INTEREST The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes was founded by Queen Elisenda de Montcada, wife of King James II of Aragon. The first stone of its church was laid on March 26, 1326, and the temple was consecrated on May 3, 1327. Designed to house a community of Clarissan nuns, the monastery constitutes one of the most representative ensembles of Catalan Gothic. Its architecture stands out for the sobriety of forms, the monumental church, and the extraordinary harmony of its cloister. Queen Elisenda resided in a palace adjoining the monastery after becoming a widow and remained linked to the community until her death in 1364. The present composition captures some of the architectural elements most characteristic of the ensemble, especially the church portal and its bell tower. The presence of tall cypresses adds a poetic dimension to the landscape, reinforcing the scene’s quiet and spiritual character. The piece is presented in a broad-gilded wooden frame, with a light mat that enhances its historical character. An especially evocative image for collectors interested in Catalan painting, Gothic architecture, and Barcelona’s historical memory. 6. SHIPPING AND CONDITIONS The artwork will be packed by a professional specializing company in a custom-made box with foam protections adapted to the piece’s characteristics. Great care will be taken to protect the paper, glass, and framing. We ship worldwide.
