AFTER ANTONIO CANOVA, A GRAND TOUR BRONZE FIGURE OF THE PUGILIST DAMOXENUS EARLY 19TH CENTURY 23cm high, the base 11cm wide Canova’s marble figures of the boxers Creugas and Damoxenus are now on display in the Cortile Ottagono (Octagonal Court) of the Vatican Museums. Dating from 1800, Canova was inspired by the story of their fight related by Pausanias in his work “Hellados Periegesis” (“Description of Greece”).
