A ZULU GLASS BEADWORK WAISTBAND OR BELT of four rolls covered in red, black, white and blue, another, a two roll belt in pink glass beadwork with a blur ground diamond decorated apron, a bead and strand-work belt and other pieces of beadwork. 74 cms max This collection of beadwork was brought back to the UK by Ernest Cox, the great, great uncle of the vendor after the 1st Boer War in South Africa (16th Dec 1880 - 23rd March 1881). Ernest was then a Lieutenant in the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders. He later joined the Anglo-Egyptian Expeditionary Force led by Major General Sir Herbert Kitchener which fought the Mahdist Sudanese army led by Addallahi ibn Muhammad at the battle of Omduman (2nd Sept 1898). Ernest then returned to South Africa and was killed in the 2nd Boer War on the 11th December 1899, aged 31 at the Battle of Magerfontein.
