A William & Mary oyster kingwood and rosewood chest on low s...

A William & Mary oyster kingwood and rosewood chest on low stand, attributed to Thomas Pistor, circa 1690, the projecting top inlaid with radiating medallions and alternating oysters outlined and featherbanded in rosewood, over two short and three graduated long drawers with conforming inlay, the base fitted with a single long drawer, over an apron with two acorn finials, on turned bun to peg feet, 108cm high, 101cm wide, 58cm deep Provenance: copy of an old bill of sale from J H Gillingham, 1 & 5, Harrington Road, South Kensington, SW7, dated 1938. John Henry Gillingham, a BADA dealer, was based at the above address from 1932-1957. The receipt states that this chest on low stand came from the collection of Walter [sic] H Paton Esquire RSA and formerly at Holyrood Palace. Waller Hugh Paton RSA RSW (27 July 1828 – 8 March 1895) was a Scottish landscape artist in the second half of the 19th century. From 1875, he lived at 14 George Square, Edinburgh. Literature: An 'oyster-veneered princeswood' (kingwood) fall-front bureau or 'escritoire', that can be closely related to this cabinet on chest, was illustrated in Country Life (11 August 1950, p. 44) in one of a series of articles on Buxted Park, owned by the architect Basil Ionides. The bureau was inscribed to the interior 'Mr. Thomas Pistor, Ludgate Hill, London' (C. Gilbert, The Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, p. 44). The attribution to Pistor follows the same use of exotic kingwood or 'princeswood' veneers, the wavy decoration to the drawers, the same geometric patterns to the inlay of the sides and to the drawers of the base, and the same radiating pattern to medallions on the top. The cabinetmaker Thomas Pistor is believed to have worked at Moorfields and Ludgate Hill, London from 1668 to 1706. The announcement of Mr Pistor's (junior) posthumous stock sale in the Spectator on 22 March 1711, was published by R.W. Symonds in 1929. A documented commission by Thomas Pistor now at Levens Hall, Cumbria is a suite of furniture made for James Grahme, a friend and member of the household of James, Duke of York (later King James II 1685-88), with bills dating from August 1684 to 1687 and probably relating to his London home or Bagshot Lodge, including for a '… Large wall(nut) flowered Looking glass & Tables and Stands flowered... 09 10 00', delivered in April 1685, see Adriana Turpin, 'Thomas Pistor, Father and Son, and Levens Hall', Furniture History, 2000, pp. 43-60.
