the silver fittings by Thomas Whitehouse, London 1868, the brass bound case with brass stringing, the hinged cover inlaid in brass with a shield inscribed FROM VR TO MAHARAJA above a crowned lion and a ribbon inscribed DULEEP SINGH, the front with a shield escutcheon above a ribbon inscribed 6th SEPTEMBER, opening to a blue velvet lined fitted interior with a hinged mirror to the cover, fitted with cut glass jars and bottles with silver covers, a silver mounted rectangular box and a cased manicure set, above a fitted drawer containing photographs and prints of the Maharaja. 21.5cm high, 33cm wide, 25cm deep, Maharaja Duleep Singh (1838-1893), the last ruler of the Sikh Empire, was deposed as a child following the Second Anglo-Sikh War and came to England in 1854, where he was received at court and became a favourite of Queen Victoria. He was born on 6th September 1838, and the ribbon to the front suggests that the box was given to him as a birthday present
