A sacred Garra hook figure used as charm - Gra - hunstein...

This wooden gra or garra hook figure comes from the Bahinemo people of the Hunstein Mountains, Papua New Guinea. Its slender central form and boldly curving hooks create a striking silhouette, while traces of pale and reddish pigment remain visible on the worn surface. Gra figures were kept in Bahinemo ceremonial houses and carried by initiated men during dances associated with initiation. The open, rhythmic arrangement of the hooks gives this example a strong sculptural presence. A distinctive piece of Sepik art.
