A Rare Tibetan Monastic Ceremonial Cham Dance Robe

Chinese kesi yellow dragon robe bands and brocade material dates to Qing dynasty (1644-1912), 18th century, robe fashioned in Tibet during the 19th century, interior of robe is extensively hand painted on hemp fabric with Buddhist deities, stupas, and other religious symbols. Hanging 47 x 62 in., Folded 5 x 12 x 14 in. Private Collection, Charlotte, North Carolina, collected in Nepal during the 1970s The robe was purchased in Kathmandu, Nepal by the consignor in 1973. Cham is the ritual masked dance performed by Tibetan Buddhist monks at New Year and other key points in the monastic calendar. The dancer becomes a vessel for the protective deity, not merely a performer of one and the elaborately crafted costumes reflect this weight of purpose. Cham robes are cut full and stiff-skirted, so the fabric holds its shape and swings dramatically with each turn. Typically made from heavy brocaded silk that came from China, acquired through trade along Himalayan routes and as diplomatic gifts to Tibetan monasteries from the imperial court. Woven in centers such as Nanjing and Suzhou with dragons, phoenixes, clouds, and floral scrollwork, these brocades were valued for their density and technical refinement. Surviving examples are prized today both as ritual objects and as tangible evidence of the centuries-long exchange between Tibetan monastic culture and Chinese textile production. Condition is commensurate with age and use during monastic dance ceremonies over the centuries. There are scattered stains, tears, separation to hems, and soil to surface.
