A Rare Lacquered Wood Folding Armchair (Jiaoyi), Qing dynasty

A Rare Lacquered Wood Folding Armchair (Jiaoyi) A rare and distinctive Chinese folding armchair (jiaoyi), constructed from carved wood and originally extensively coated with traditional lacquer. The chair retains its characteristic folding construction and is fitted with iron rings and metal fittings. Due to its considerable age, much of the original lacquer has worn away or been lost, revealing the aged wooden structure beneath. At a later date, the chair was reinforced and secured with woven cord, which has become an integral part of its present appearance and reflects the object's long history of use and restoration. Despite the losses to the original lacquer and later repairs, the chair remains structurally complete. Its unusual construction, age, and surviving elements make it a particularly rare and evocative example of early Chinese furniture.
