(*) AR Penck is a painter, draftsman, sculptor, born in 1939 in Dresden and died in 2017 in Zurich. He attempted to enroll at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1956, but was rejected, particularly due to his communist beliefs. In 1968, Ralf Winkler gave himself the name AR Penck, a pseudonym inspired by the geologist Albrecht Penck. He is recognized in the rebel character of Rembrandt, who, like him, was a stranger. AR Penck risked working according to his Marxist ideals in the GDR. His works were censored and he would be stripped of his nationality. His work recalls that of the great moderns: Picasso, Kirchner, Klee, Giacometti, but retains a wilder, rougher aspect, approaching graffiti. His universe is nourished by colorful characters, symbols, assembled in a wild way. He composes his language to “represent beings in action.” He nicknamed this pictorial style: Standart. As soon as he left West Germany in 1980, rejection gave way to success, he won the Rembrandt Prize in Basel in 1981 and in 1985 the Aix-la-Chapelle Art Prize. It will be the subject of a major retrospective at the Paris Modern Art Museum and at the Maeght Foundation.
