Qing dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century, ink and watercolors on paper, large scale vertical paintings of two scenes, the first with a noble traveling- a picnic of wine is set up under the willow trees, his attendant besides the table with large fan, in lower area of painting his horse and attendant are waiting, the second features an official visiting a nobleman at his home, his attendants bearing gifts follow in as the official bows to the host, a small group of musicians play a welcome, the scene is framed with large craggy rock s and lush trees, both paintings with paper borders, presented under plexiglass in identical gilt wood frames. Frame dimensions 76 x 23 1/4 x 1 in., Sight size 72 x 20 1/4 in. From the Collection of John and Sandra Christian, III, of New York, San Francisco, and Richmond John Wortham Christian III (1951–2023) of Richmond, Virginia, was a lifelong traveler and collector whose appreciation for the arts and cultures of Asia developed through decades of international travel. After graduating from Duke University, Christian began his career with Bloomingdale’s in New York, where his work as a buyer and later Vice President of Contemporary Apparel took him extensively throughout Europe, Far East Asia, Southeast Asia, and India in search of emerging designers, artisans, and traditional crafts. He later moved to San Francisco to join I. Magnin, eventually serving as Vice President and General Merchandise Manager. Travel remained a defining passion throughout his life. Christian and his wife, Sandra, sought out destinations well beyond the conventional tourist routes, traveling extensively in Asia and the Himalayas, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, and other parts of Southeast Asia. These journeys fostered their enduring interest in the art, craftsmanship, and material cultures of the countries they visited. Overall good estate condition; overall even toning to the paper; some creases with cracks to edges of paper; some repairs; some dirt and stains, particularly to the left and right edges; a scratch with loss to noble figure in greeting scene; a piece of tape visible through frame to top of one.
