The 1920s and 1930s in New York: these were the years of the Jazz Age, legendary clubs and glittering nights, when a new modernity broke through. Politically and economically characterized by contrasts, yet filled with a belief in progress, luxury and joie de vivre, the city became the epitome of Art Deco. Skyscrapers such as the Chrysler Building or the Empire State Building lend the skyline a crystalline austerity and a clear geometric rhythm - an attitude to life that is also reflected in the jewellery of the time. This pair of "dress clips" by Tiffany & Co., New York, comes from this era. These dress clips are among the most characteristic forms of Art Deco jewellery. Particularly elaborate examples were produced from the late 1920s onwards by houses such as Cartier, Boucheron and Van Cleef & Arpels in Paris, and goldsmiths around the world soon took up this new form. Their special feature is their versatility: worn on either side of the neckline, side by side, on the straps of a silk dress or as a sparkling accent on the back neckline, we encounter these clips in photographs of the film stars of the time. They were also used individually, for example on hats, in the hair or in the middle of the décolleté. The design of this pair is a prime example of the Déco style: clear, rich in contrast and with an architectural effect, yet finely crafted down to the last detail. The combination of white diamonds, onyx and platinum with subtle yellow gold accents is reminiscent of the fashion of those years in which the contrast of black and white defined the aesthetic. At the center of the two identically designed clips are curved cut onyx panels around which the design unfolds. A total of around 160 diamonds in various cuts form a fan-like, fully set shape on one side, while the opposite side forms an open frame through which the fabric of the garment worn remains visible. This creates an exciting interplay of surface and transparency, shine and structure, which further enhances the impression of exclusive modernity. A piece from the vibrant Déco period, created to be worn in a variety of ways.
