A medium four-panel folding screen with cranes beside a stream - Paper

An elegant and rare size four-panel screen, painted on paper and embellished with gold sand, depicting a group of cranes along the bank of a gently flowing stream, set within a restrained landscape enriched by bamboo, rocks and low waterside vegetation. Each bird is portrayed in a distinct pose creating a natural rhythm that evokes the quiet passage of time. The composition is carefully balanced by concentrating the cranes on the left, while the landscape gradually opens towards the right. Delicate ink lines define the flowing water, and a fine scattering of gold flakes across the background subtly enhances the sense of depth. In Japanese culture, the crane has long symbolised longevity, fidelity and good fortune. Here, however, its symbolic meaning gives way to a sensitive observation of nature, where the stillness of the landscape and the birds' unforced gestures come together in a composition of remarkable harmony. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. ---The byobu is in good condition, with minor wear, stains and minor repairs to the paper. Please refer to the pictures for further details. The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy. 004
