A. Genuensis - Disciplinarum Metaphysicarum Elementa - 1779

Antonio Genovesi Elements of the Metaphysical Disciplines, adorned in the mathematical manner The very latest edition, revised by the author himself from all the earlier editions, and regarded as not his own, completely reformatted, enriched with perpetual additions, and now for the first time divided into five volumes. Bassani, (1779) – Venice, at Remondini. 5 volumes in 3 folio? volumes in-8° (size 18 × 11.5 cm). Pp. xxiv, 299; 396; 344; xxxii, 336, XIV; XVI, 447. Contemporary binding in full marbled calf with gilt titles and ornaments to the spines; minimal signs of age to the binding, interiors fresh and well preserved. Complete work of the famous definitive edition, revised and substantially enlarged by the same Antonio Genovesi (1713-1769), professor of Ethics and later of Economics at the University of Naples. The treatise presents, in rigorously systematic and “mathematical” form, the foundations of metaphysics (ontology, cosmology, natural theology, rational psychology), integrating the scholastic tradition with the new Enlightenment impulses and the Cartesian and Leibnizian critiques. A particularly rare and sought-after edition: it is the first to be divided into five volumes and represents the author’s final will, in which he introduced substantial corrections and unpublished additions. It documents one of the high points of Neapolitan philosophy in the eighteenth century and constitutes a reference text for the study of eighteenth-century Italian metaphysics. Excellent, complete copy, suitable for philosophy and high-level antiquarian books collections.
